유네스코 자문기구, 반구천의 암각화 보존·관리 현황 등 점검… 2025년 제47차 세계유산위에서 최종 등재여부 결정

  국가유산청(청장 최응천)이 지난 1월 유네스코 세계유산으로 등재 신청한 「반구천의 암각화(Petroglyphs along the Bangucheon Stream)」에 대한 국제기념물유적협의회(ICOMOS, 이하 ‘이코모스’)의 현장실사가 지난 5월 27일부터 31일까지 진행되었다.

「반구천의 암각화」는 그림과 문자가 집중적으로 확인되는 국보 「울주 대곡리 반구대 암각화」와 「울주 천전리 명문과 암각화」를 포함하는 단일유산이다.

세계유산 등재를 위한 현장실사는 유네스코가 의뢰하면 자문기관에서 수행하는 것으로, 국가유산청이 세계문화유산으로 등재하고자 유네스코에 신청한 「반구천의 암각화」에 대한 현장실사는 이코모스에서 지명한 서호주대학교(The University of Western Australia) 교수 벤자민 스미스(Benjamin Smith)씨가 담당하였다.
벤자민 스미스 씨는 5일간의 실사 기간 동안 유산구역과 완충구역을 방문하여 유산의 진정성과 완전성, 보존관리 및 활용 현황 등을 점검하고, 관계 기관의 의견을 직접 청취하였다.

현장실사는 서류심사, 패널회의 등 여러 전문가의 참여로 진행되는 세계유산 심사과정의 한 단계로, 이코모스는 이번 실사 결과를 포함한 최종 평가결과를 2025년 7월 경 개최하는 제47차 유네스코 세계유산위원회의 세계유산 등재 심사에 보고하며, 이 위원회에서 세계유산으로서의 등재 여부가 최종 결정될 예정이다.

국가유산청은 앞으로도 「반구천의 암각화」의 세계유산 등재를 위하여 지자체와 관계부처 등과 지속적으로 협력하는 등 남은 심사과정에 최선을 다할 것이다.

The evaluation mission to “Petroglyphs along the Bangucheon Stream” was carried out by the International Council on Monuments and Sites (hereinafter referred to as “ICOMOS”) from May 27 to 31, 2024. The nomination dossier was submitted by the Korea Heritage Service (KHS; Commissioner Choi, Eungcheon) in January this year.

The “Petroglyphs along the Bangucheon Stream,” nominated as a World Heritage Site, is a single property that includes the Petroglyphs of Bangudae Terrace in Daegok-ri, Ulju which is a National Treasure with a high concentration of engraved images, as well as the Petroglyphs of Cheonjeon-ri, Ulju.

ICOMOS, an advisory body to UNESCO, sent Professor Benjamin Smith from the University of Western Australia to conduct the on-site mission of "Petroglyphs along the Bangucheon Stream."
During the five-day mission, Professor Smith visited both the heritage site and buffer zone to evaluate the authenticity and integrity of the site, as well as its preservation, management and utilization. He also gathered opinions from relevant organizations.

The onsite mission is a crucial part of the UNESCO World Heritage evaluation process, engaging various experts and including desk reviews and panel meetings. ICOMOS will consolidate its findings from the mission and present a detailed evaluation report for the 47th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in July 2025. The committee will make the final decision about the inscription of “Petroglyphs along the Bangucheon Stream” as a World Heritage Site.
The Korea Heritage Service will continue to collaborate closely with local governments, relevant ministries, and other stakeholders to ensure the successful inscription of “Petroglyphs along the Bangucheon Stream" on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
