- 덕수궁관리소ㆍSK텔레콤, 13일부터 디지털 콘텐츠(VR) 앱 제공 -

  문화재청 궁능유적본부 덕수궁관리소(소장 방현기)는 SK텔레콤(사장 박정호)과 함께 스마트폰으로 덕수궁 석조전을 실감나게 관람할 수 있는 ‘덕수궁 VR(가상현실) 관람’ 서비스를 13일부터 선보인다.

  SK텔레콤이 개발한 ‘5GX 점프 VR’은 별도 기기 없이 스마트폰만으로도 360도 VR영상을 볼 수 있는 앱으로, 지난해 출시된 이후 앱 내에 인기 e스포츠나 게임같은 다양한 콘텐츠를 즐길 수 있으며 이번 석조전을 시작으로 문화재 분야로도 콘텐츠가 확대되고 있다.

덕수궁관리소는 이번 석조전 VR 앱 서비스를 시작으로 추후 중화전, 실제 관람에서도 내부 관람이 제한됐던 함녕전과 석어당 내부를 가상공간을 통해 순차적으로 공개할 것이다.

  이번 서비스를 통해 이용자는 가입 통신사와 관계없이 누구나 ‘점프 VR’앱을 내려 받으면 덕수궁의 역사와 배경을 안내자의 해설로 들으며 석조전 내부를 360도로 돌아가며 자유롭게 관람할 수 있으며, 현장 관람 못지않은 생생함을 느낄 수 있다. 스마트폰을 들고 보고자 하는 쪽으로 방향을 바꾸면 석조전의 원하는 장면이 자유롭게 눈앞에 펼쳐진다.

황제가 앉았던 의자에 직접 앉는 것 같은 가상체험도 할 수 있고, 중화전 천장의 용무늬 장식과 석조전 황실 침실에 놓인 옛 가구들도 자세히 살펴볼 수 있다.

  참고로, 코로나19로 인해 올해 2월부터 덕수궁 실내시설인 석조전 내부와 중명전 관람이 중지되었고(5.6.~28. 석조전 지층‧중명전만 개관), 지난 5월 29일부터는 궁궐 전체 관람도 중단된 상태이다. 이에 따라 올해 1~6월 덕수궁 누적 관람객 수는 약 47만 명으로, 지난해 같은 기간과 대비해 3분의 1 수준으로 줄었다. 적극행정 차원에서 선보이는 이번 덕수궁 VR 관람 서비스는 이렇게 중단된 궁궐 관람을 대체하는 코로나19시대의 ‘비대면 문화재 관람 서비스’가 될 것으로 기대된다.

  참고로, 덕수궁관리소와 SK텔레콤은 이미 지난 3월 덕수궁 내 12개 궁궐 건물들과 6만 1천 2백여㎡에 달하는 궁궐 공간을 스마트폰을 통한 증강현실로 즐길 수 있는 ‘점프 AR(Jump AR)’ 앱 서비스도 시작해 좋은 반응을 얻고 있다.

  문화재청 덕수궁관리소는 이번 기회로 국민 모두가 언제 어디서든 온라인으로 덕수궁 석조전을 관람하고 황제가 거닐었던 공간을 체험하는 경험을 가져보기를 바란다.

Deoksugung Palace Management Office and SK Telecom Begin Virtual Reality Tour
Amid COVID-19 Pandemic

The Cultural Heritage Administration`s Deoksugung Palace Management Office(DirectorBang Hyun-ki)and SK Telecom (NYSE:SKM)today launched a virtual reality (VR) tour of Deoksugung Palace* to support culture and heritage during the COVID-19 pandemic.
* Deoksugung Palace is one of five royal palaces remaining in Seoul. Mainly built at the term of the 20th century, Deoksugung Palace is the smallest of Seoul’s palaces. The name Deoksugung Palace means “Palace of virtue and longevity” in the spirit of praying for long life for Emperor Gojong.

According to the Deoksugung Palace Management Office, from January to June 2020, the cumulative number of visitors to Deoksugung Palace was 470,000, which is only one-third of that of last year, due to the temporary close-down in response to the spread of COVID-19. The reopening date of the Palace remains unknown.

The VR tour of Deoksugung Palace is offered through a series of 360-degree VR videos that take visitors on a guided tour of traditional and modern palace buildings of Deoksugung. Two videos of Seokjojeon have been released today and two more on Daehanmun, Junghwajeon, Hamnyeongjeon, Jeukjodang and Seogeodang are scheduled to be released on July 17, 2020. 

The Deoksugung Palace Management Office will also be disclosing partial sites of the palace, where on-site visitors’ entrance had been limited. For instance, users will be able to take a closer look at the ceiling decoration with 2 dragons from where the emperor’s throne was located in the Junghwajeon Hall, and the British antique furniture placed in the emperor's bedroom in the Seokjojeon Hall.

The Deoksugung VR contents provide an experience very similar to that of an on-site visit. An actual guide appears in the videos to explain historical meanings, which users can listen to while enjoying a 360-degree view of their surroundings.

The VR tour of Deoksugung can be enjoyed free of charge by anyone regardless of their mobile carrier, with or without a device, through SK Telecom’s Jump VR app.
SK Telecom has been making constant efforts to introduce Korea’s cultural heritage to a greater number of people by fully utilizing its 5G-based immersive media technologies. In March this year, the company introduced 'AR Deoksugung,' a service which allows users to view 12 palace buildings that span across 61,205㎡in 3D augmented reality.

“Due to COVID-19, Deoksugung Palace has remained closed for several months. Through Deoksugung Palace VR contents, we hope everyone will have opportunities to virtually tour Deoksugung Palace and experience the historical spaces where the emperor had strolled a long time ago,” said Bang Hyun-ki, Director of Deoksugung Palace Management Office.
