국립고궁박물관, 프랑스 기업 히스토버리와 ‘파리 노트르담 증강현실 특별전’ 공동 개최(7.2.~9.1.)

국가유산청 국립고궁박물관(관장 정용재)은 프랑스 기업 히스토버리(HISTOVERY)와 함께 7월 2일부터 9월 1일까지 국립고궁박물관 2층 기획전시실(서울 종로구)에서 파리 노트르담 대성당의 역사를 증강현실(AR)로 체험할 수 있는 디지털 전시 「파리 노트르담 대성당 증강현실 특별전: 내 손으로 만나는 860년의 역사」를 개최한다.
* AR(Augmented Reality, 증강현실): 스마트폰이나 태블릿 등을 이용해 실제 환경에 가상의 사물이나 정보 등을 섞어 현실과 가상세계를 혼합한 경험을 할 수 있는 기술

이번 전시는 그간 다양한 특별전을 통해 국외 왕실문화유산을 소개해 온 국립고궁박물관이, 프랑스 왕국 역사에서 중요한 의미를 지닌 왕실유산이자 세계유산인 파리 노트르담 대성당(Notre-Dame de Paris)의 역사를 통해 전 세계가 공유하는 문화유산의 의미와 가치를 되짚어보고자 프랑스의 증강현실 콘텐츠 전문 기업 ‘히스토버리’와 협업으로 개최하게 되었다.

파리 노트르담 대성당은 대표적인 유럽의 종교 건축으로 전 세계적인 사랑을 받아왔으나, 2019년 4월 화재로 첨탑과 지붕이 붕괴되는 등 큰 손상을 입었다. 이후 5년 간 프랑스 정부의 노력과 전 세계적인 후원으로 복원 공사를 진행해 올해 12월 재개관을 앞두고 있다.

이번 전시에서는 1163년 초석이 놓이던 순간부터 2019년 화재 이후 현재 진행 중인 복원 과정까지 860여년에 걸친 파리 노트르담 대성당의 역사를 시공간을 넘나들며 증강현실로 체험할 수 있다. 노트르담 대성당 증강현실 특별전은 이번 한국 전시에 앞서, 파리를 시작으로 워싱턴, 상하이, 몬트리올, 두바이 등 전 세계 주요 도시의 순회 전시를 통해 약 50만 명의 관람객들이 방문했으며, 한국에 오기 직전인 2월에는 영국 런던의 웨스트민스터 사원에서도 전시가 열린 바 있다. 콘텐츠 개발과 전시 개최는 로레알그룹이 후원하였으며, 국립고궁박물관에서의 전시에는 특별히 삼성전자도 후원사로 참여했다.

관람객들은 ‘히스토버리’가 개발한 ‘히스토패드(HistoPad) 솔루션’이 적용된 태블릿 컴퓨터를 통해 역사 속 파리 노트르담 대성당의 순간들을 3차원(3D)으로 생생하게 체험할 수 있다. ▲ 1180년 고딕 양식의 성가대석이 세워지는 과정, ▲ 1241년 루이 9세가 들여온 가시면류관, ▲ 1804년 나폴레옹 1세의 대관식, ▲ 1859년 웅장한 비올레 르 뒤크의 첨탑이 건설되는 모습, ▲ 2019년 파리 노트르담 대성당에서 일어난 화재 현장과 귀중한 문화유산을 지켜낸 파리 소방대원들의 모습과 현재 복원 작업이 진행 중인 모습까지도 만나볼 수 있다.

증강현실 체험의 몰입감을 더하기 위해 전시장 곳곳에는 대형 사진 패널과 3차원(3D) 모형, 실물 크기의 키메라 석상 등이 배치되어 있다. 노트르담 대성당 바닥을 재현한 카펫과 스테인드글라스를 옮겨 놓은 듯한 창문, 오르간 소리와 종소리, 성당의 상징인 장미창의 모습 등도 연출되어 관람객들로 하여금 실제 현장에 와 있는 듯한 경험을 제공할 것이다.
또한, 전시 관람 중 태블릿 컴퓨터 내에 숨겨진 보물찾기를 완수하면 로레알코리아에서 후원하는 소정의 선물도 증정한다.

이번 특별전을 기획한 정용재 국립고궁박물관장은 “문화유산을 디지털유산으로 변화시키고 활용해 더 많은 사람들이 더 다양한 방식으로 즐길 수 있도록 하는 것은 세계적인 추세이다. 세계적인 유산인 노트르담 대성당의 역사를 가상으로 체험할 수 있는 좋은 기회가 되기를 바란다”고 밝혔으며, 특별전을 후원한 로레알코리아의 사무엘 뒤 리테일(Samuel du RETAIL) 대표는 “115년 전통의 프랑스 기업으로서 국보급 유산 프로젝트를 한국의 유구한 역사를 간직한 국립고궁박물관에서 선보이게 되어 기쁘게 생각한다.”고 전했다.

한편, 국립고궁박물관은 이번 특별전과 연계하여 국립문화유산연구원과 오는 7월 10일 ‘사라진 세계의 문화유산, 복원과 과제’ 국제학술대회를 국립고궁박물관에서 개최해 숭례문이나 파리 노트르담 대성당, 일본 오키나와 슈리성 등 외부적 요인으로 큰 피해를 입고 원형을 잃은 문화유산들의 복원과 향후 활용 과제에 대한 국내외 전문가들의 발표와 토론의 자리도 마련한다.

국가유산청 국립고궁박물관은 앞으로도 왕실유산 전문 박물관으로서 국내외의 왕실문화유산을 적극적으로 알리고, 양질의 관람 콘텐츠를 제공하기 위해 국내외의 다양한 전문기관과 활발히 협력하는 등의 적극행정을 이어갈 계획이다.

The National Palace Museum of Korea (Director: Jeong Yong-jae), an affiliate of the Korea Heritage Service, is hosting Notre-Dame de Paris, the Augmented Exhibition: 850 Years of History and Resilience at Your Fingertips. The exhibition will offer visitors an experience of the history of Notre-Dame de Paris through augmented reality (AR)* from July 2 to September 1 in the Special Exhibition Gallery on the second floor of the National Palace Museum of Korea (situated in the Jongno-gu district of Seoul).
* Augmented reality (AR): A technology that combines virtual objects or information with the actual environment using devices such as smartphones or tablets to create an experience blending reality with the virtual world.
Notre-Dame de Paris is a prime example of European religious architecture and a beloved World Heritage Site. It suffered significant damage in April 2019 when a fire caused the collapse of its spire and roof. Through the efforts of the French government and an outpouring of global support, restoration has been underway over the past five years and the cathedral’s reopening is imminent.
This exhibition provides visitors with an augmented reality experience of the 860-year history of Notre-Dame de Paris, from the laying of its foundation stone in 1163 to the restoration efforts taking place since the fire in 2019. The content was developed by Histovery in collaboration with the public authority in responsible of the conservation and restoration of the Notre-Dame de Paris. It has been presented in major cities worldwide as part of an immersive exhibition. Starting in Paris, the exhibition has been touring cities including Washington DC, Shanghai, Montreal, and Dubai, attracting around 500,000 visitors. It was recently presented at Westminster Abbey in London. The exhibition is supported by the L'Oréal Group, and Samsung Electronics will join as a sponsor for the Seoul exhibition.

Visitors are invited to use tablet PCs equipped with Histovery’s HistoPad solution to vividly experience key historic moments at the cathedral reconstructed in 3D. The events brought to life include the construction of the Gothic choir stalls in 1180, the enshrinement of the Crown of Thorns by Louis IX in 1241, the coronation of Napoleon I in 1804, and the construction of the grand spire by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc in 1859.
In addition, visitors can witness the fire of 2019, the heroic efforts of the Paris fire brigade to save this invaluable cultural heritage, and the ongoing restoration project.

To enhance the immersive AR experience, the exhibition will present large photo panels, 3D models, life-sized chimera statues, and more. Additional elements such as a carpet replicating the cathedral floor, stained glass-like windows, the sounds of the organ and bells, and the iconic rose windows will transport visitors to the heart of this historic site. There is also a treasure hunt mission that can be completed through the HistoPad to earn a small gift sponsored by L'Oréal Korea. The HistoPad supports thirteen languages (including Korean) and is accessible to visitors with visual or mobility impairments.

The National Palace Museum of Korea has hosted a wide range of special exhibitions introducing royal cultural heritage from around the world. This exhibition was organized in collaboration with an overseas organization to highlight the history of Notre-Dame de Paris—a cultural heritage site significant in both France and around the world— and to reflect on the meaning and value of our shared cultural heritage. In conjunction with this special exhibition, the museum will join with the National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage to co-host an international academic conference on July 10 entitled “Restoration of Damaged Cultural Heritage around the World and Related Challenges.” The conference will bring together domestic and international experts to discuss the restoration and future utilization of cultural heritage sites that have suffered significant damage due to external factors, such as Sungnyemun Gate in South Korea, Notre-Dame de Paris, and Shurijo Castle in Okinawa, Japan.

As a museum specializing in royal heritage, the National Palace Museum of Korea will continue to actively promote royal cultural heritage in Korea and abroad and actively cooperate with specialized institutions worldwide to provide quality viewing content to visitors.
